Thursday Thirteen #9
Favorite Broadway Musical Songs
1. Summer Nights
from Grease
Grease was one of my favorite movies growing up, and still is. My kids love it too, and we’ve been known to blast the soundtrack and with the entire family singing at the tops of our lungs, singing the male and female parts respectively.
2. The Stepsisters’ Lament
from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella
I love this musical partly because Cinderella is one of my favorite fairy tales, but also because I was involved in that production in high school. The Stepsisters’ Lament is always the highlight of the show. It’s hilarious, especially the line they sing (referring to Cindy): “She’s a frothy little bubble/With a flimsy kind of charm/With very little trouble/I could break her little arm!”
3. The Point of No Return
from The Phantom of the Opera
This song probably needs no explanation…it’s one of the most passionate, simmering, angsty songs out there. It just makes this musical, especially in the movie and when you can actually see Gerard Butler’s face. Loin quiveration. Big time.
And, in the did-you-know-category: this was the very first scene they filmed when doing the movie. Wow.
4. It’s A Fine Life
from Oliver!
My Music Man and I met more than sixteen years ago doing a community theater production of Oliver!
I always tell people that our relationship started off on the right foot—I was the Assistant Director and Stage Manager for the production, and he was merely a cast member. So he had to do everything I said.
And, yes, there might have been some hanky-panky going on in the wings (which is how I got some of my ideas for backstage scenes in my Phantom book), but all in all, it was a great production because that particular musical is so much fun to do!
5. All Good Gifts
from Godspell
6. There Are Worse Things I Could Do
from Grease
7. Music of the Night
from The Phantom of the Opera
8. I’d Do Anything
from Oliver!
9. Ten Minutes Ago
from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella
10. Patron Saints
from Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?
This was the second musical production my Music Man and I did together, immediately after we closed Oliver! It’s a hilarious, touching show about growing up, with the backdrop of attending a Catholic school (which I did).
The guy who directed it for our community theater group had been one of the main characters in the Broadway show, so he had choreography that was way beyond most community theater productions. It was a huge success. I wish it would be revived; I’d love to see it again.
11. I Don’t Know How to Love Him
from Jesus Christ, Superstar
12. How Far is Too Far?
from Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?
13. I Shall Scream!
from Oliver!

LOVE Jesus Christ Superstar! And Grease...great list!
Okay...I'm going to sound like I totally copied Tug up there...but I love Grease and JC Superstar, too! My High School performed JC Superstar the year before I got there and the year after I left. I was so bummed I couldn't be part of it...but I dated the guy who played Jesus...he was a pretty big thing back then. :)
Happy Thursday!
Me three... I played Mary M once in high school. I love that song... but I think my favorite part is the intro: 'Try not to be worried, try not to hold on to, troubles that upset you don't you know everything's all right, yes, everything's fine...'
So, I had a Thursday 13 90% written for today, and I'm now going to have to steal this one because it's too good. I'm redoing it right now.
I love "I don't know how to love him." LOVE IT.
Happy TT!
wow, you made #2spot!!
nice list, I love Music of the night-it's so beautiful. #11-my dad was super into that musical..really strange experience lately of singing a hymn to that tune...sad part, the college students singing along were all to young to recognize the tune!!!made me feel really old.
happy TT, mine is up!
Jenny in Ca
Is 'quiveration' really a word?? ;)
Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? sounds like it'd be a great show! You and Music Man must have some good memories...
I loved Grease as well!
I'm up!
Greece is great but I would have to pick songs from Wicked or Rent...My hubby totally got me into musicals
Arrrgh! I HATE when IE crashes for stupid reasons before I post my comments! This has not been a good week for me and my delicate Republican sensitivities.
Anyway for the second time, did not like Grease, loved JCSS especially all of Judas' songs. and Caiaphas songs. My favorit Godspell tunes were "Turn back Oh Man" and "All for the Best". Loved Phantom.
My T13 "I'm disgruntled because the Republicans lost so I'm taking it out on New Orleans Edition" is up.
Interesting choice of songs.
I linked to you from TT 13 Reasons Republicans Lost
*moseys off to listen to the songs*
Great TT, Colleen.
Great TT. I agree with most of them, except with my Phantom pics they would be from the Broadway cast with Michael Crawford (the only phantom worth mentioning in my book) and Sarah Brightman.
Happy Thursday. Mine are up.
I love musicals! For me the best is The Phantom of The Opera, but there are so many more good ones.
My TT is about TV-series.
Oh Oh Oh...I love "Past The Point of No Return". So sultry and passionate, especially with Gerard Butler's eyes searing through the very fiber of your being!
I love all musicals, but I can boast to being able to quote most of the script to Grease, and I adore Godspell, and JC Superstar.....Fantastic list, makes me want to dig out some of my soundtrack CD's!!
Happy TT!
Point of No Return is my favourite song from Phantom. I could watch that scene in the movie version over and over. Makes me melt every time. :)
great list! i love musicals.
my favorites are Les Miserables and South Pacific.
I am so stealing this list some time and I love that you met your husband while stage managing one - how fun!
Mmmmm... Gerard Butler...
Oops, sorry, attention wandered off. My TT is up -- Thirteen of my favorite meals at restaurants.
I *heart* Phantom! I won't embarrass myself and tell you how many times I've seen it live. My youngest son and I have been many times - just this summer, in fact *g*
Also love Les Miz. Camelot. The Music Man. Jesus Christ Superstar.
I'd better stop now. I'm a musical theater junkie *g*
Haven't heard many of those. Love most of the songs from Phantom. Most of my favorites come from Les Miserables.
Nice list!
I'm not big on broadway...matter of fact, I was never even in drama in school (even though they did cast me in Lil Abner...but no one ever came to practice so it was cancelled).
I love Grease. My husband hates musicals so I think I've seen it once in the last five years and that was when he was TDY. He's not in the USAF anymore.
I own Chicago...but I've never watched it.
I've only heard the soundtracks for Phantom and Grease. I sing Summer Nights with one of my dad's friends when we're down visiting. We get a really big applause.
The Music of the Night is by far my favorite from Phantom. I play that one over and over.
13 Things I Do to Relax
Great list of songs!!!! I'm still looking forward to watch Phantom of the Opera in the near future.
Happy Thursday!
what a great post! i would have trouble coming up with only 13!
Great TT, Colleen. All wonderful shows and wonderful songs!
i love MUSICALS! I will have to figure out how to do this to get it up on my blog!
I'm going to have to upload Grease to my ipod now. *grumble*
At least I can finish the day with Phantom.
Congratulations on being selected as one of the Featured Thirteeners for the week! Enjoy!
:D
I don't listen to many show tunes, but I'm going to try out some of these today. Very interesting list! ;)
I love most of those as well! Happy TT!
I love Gerard. Sigh. That man has a nice set of...vocal chords.
I need to get out more. As much as I love musicals & the theater, I just haven't gotten enough!
Mine's up here if you care to stop by. :o)
Grats on being featured too!
Awesome list!!
Fabulous list. My favorite role was Rizzo, so obviously I love There are Worst Things I Could Do.
My new favorite is Defying Gravity from Wicked. Haven't gotten to see the show yet, but the soundtrack is amazing!
great list. I love a lot of those songs.
Absolutely love Phantom (and Grease, although I was more into the movie version). Great list!!
I loved that song, 10 Minutes Ago! So pretty, but so sad!
I love musicals but I'm really bad about remembering the songs unless I hear them over and over. Those were two of my favorite songs from Grease tho'!
My TT is up if you get a chance come check it out!
Of course theres a Grease song on the list! Bleh...
I do love Phantom though and its amazing what little things can tell a story about a person.
Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?
Never heard of this musical you posted about - will have to go check it out!!!
:) I have been singing most of those songs all day now. Happy TT!
my favorite is les miserables, "on my own"
i have the original cast recording cd, and i play it whenever i need a good cry, or feel like singing my heart out!
I've seen JCS on stage 3 times. Twice it was with Ted Neeley (Jesus in the movie) playing Jesus. He was amazing. Just amazing.
The other two musicals that I love and watch/listen to: Hair (I know, campy, but I love the music) and Rent. Rent is probably one of the CDs I listen to most often (the broadway version, never heard the movie version)
Summer Nights is still my favorite. I have the Kareoke music for it! Love title to your book.
I am reading "Monster" by Jonathan Kellerman. I love it.
I love musicals, but I don't think I've ever seen R&H Cinderella. I'll have to check that out.
Great list. :) I *love* musicals. :) Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Phantom of the Opera are among my favourites, as well as Les Miserables and South Pacific (we did South Pacific when I was in high school, so it holds special memories for me).
Happy T13. :)
