Thursday Thirteen #9

Thirteen of my
Favorite Broadway Musical Songs

1. Summer Nights
from Grease

Grease was one of my favorite movies growing up, and still is. My kids love it too, and we’ve been known to blast the soundtrack and with the entire family singing at the tops of our lungs, singing the male and female parts respectively.

2. The Stepsisters’ Lament
from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella

I love this musical partly because Cinderella is one of my favorite fairy tales, but also because I was involved in that production in high school. The Stepsisters’ Lament is always the highlight of the show. It’s hilarious, especially the line they sing (referring to Cindy): “She’s a frothy little bubble/With a flimsy kind of charm/With very little trouble/I could break her little arm!”

3. The Point of No Return
from The Phantom of the Opera

This song probably needs no explanation…it’s one of the most passionate, simmering, angsty songs out there. It just makes this musical, especially in the movie and when you can actually see Gerard Butler’s face. Loin quiveration. Big time.

And, in the did-you-know-category: this was the very first scene they filmed when doing the movie. Wow.

4. It’s A Fine Life
from Oliver!

My Music Man and I met more than sixteen years ago doing a community theater production of Oliver!
I always tell people that our relationship started off on the right foot—I was the Assistant Director and Stage Manager for the production, and he was merely a cast member. So he had to do everything I said.

And, yes, there might have been some hanky-panky going on in the wings (which is how I got some of my ideas for backstage scenes in my Phantom book), but all in all, it was a great production because that particular musical is so much fun to do!

5. All Good Gifts
from Godspell

6. There Are Worse Things I Could Do
from Grease

7. Music of the Night
from The Phantom of the Opera

8. I’d Do Anything
from Oliver!

9. Ten Minutes Ago
from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella

10. Patron Saints
from Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?

This was the second musical production my Music Man and I did together, immediately after we closed Oliver! It’s a hilarious, touching show about growing up, with the backdrop of attending a Catholic school (which I did).

The guy who directed it for our community theater group had been one of the main characters in the Broadway show, so he had choreography that was way beyond most community theater productions. It was a huge success. I wish it would be revived; I’d love to see it again.

11. I Don’t Know How to Love Him
from Jesus Christ, Superstar

12. How Far is Too Far?
from Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?

13. I Shall Scream!
from Oliver!

Okay...I'm going to sound like I totally copied Tug up there...but I love Grease and JC Superstar, too! My High School performed JC Superstar the year before I got there and the year after I left. I was so bummed I couldn't be part of it...but I dated the guy who played Jesus...he was a pretty big thing back then. :)

Happy Thursday!

Me three... I played Mary M once in high school. I love that song... but I think my favorite part is the intro: 'Try not to be worried, try not to hold on to, troubles that upset you don't you know everything's all right, yes, everything's fine...'

Arrrgh! I HATE when IE crashes for stupid reasons before I post my comments! This has not been a good week for me and my delicate Republican sensitivities.

Anyway for the second time, did not like Grease, loved JCSS especially all of Judas' songs. and Caiaphas songs. My favorit Godspell tunes were "Turn back Oh Man" and "All for the Best". Loved Phantom.

My T13 "I'm disgruntled because the Republicans lost so I'm taking it out on New Orleans Edition" is up.

Great TT. I agree with most of them, except with my Phantom pics they would be from the Broadway cast with Michael Crawford (the only phantom worth mentioning in my book) and Sarah Brightman.

Happy Thursday. Mine are up.

Oh Oh Oh...I love "Past The Point of No Return". So sultry and passionate, especially with Gerard Butler's eyes searing through the very fiber of your being!

I *heart* Phantom! I won't embarrass myself and tell you how many times I've seen it live. My youngest son and I have been many times - just this summer, in fact *g*

Also love Les Miz. Camelot. The Music Man. Jesus Christ Superstar.

I'd better stop now. I'm a musical theater junkie *g*

Nice list!

I'm not big on broadway...matter of fact, I was never even in drama in school (even though they did cast me in Lil Abner...but no one ever came to practice so it was cancelled).

I love Grease. My husband hates musicals so I think I've seen it once in the last five years and that was when he was TDY. He's not in the USAF anymore.

I own Chicago...but I've never watched it.

I've only heard the soundtracks for Phantom and Grease. I sing Summer Nights with one of my dad's friends when we're down visiting. We get a really big applause.

The Music of the Night is by far my favorite from Phantom. I play that one over and over.

I've seen JCS on stage 3 times. Twice it was with Ted Neeley (Jesus in the movie) playing Jesus. He was amazing. Just amazing.

The other two musicals that I love and watch/listen to: Hair (I know, campy, but I love the music) and Rent. Rent is probably one of the CDs I listen to most often (the broadway version, never heard the movie version)
